Quant au nouveau cinéma populaire qui remplit les salles, l'exemple le plus intéressant et le mieux réussi est sans nul doute le Bandit (Eşkiya, 1996) de Yavuz Turgul. Il s'agit d'un conte populaire réaliste mais volontairement romancé jusqu'à flirter avec le mélodrame, où l'on dénonce l'érosion des valeurs traditionnelles qui font cruellement défaut à la cohésion sociale. Répondant à la fois à un besoin de divertissement et à la nécessité d'un défoulement intérieur libérateur, ce film bat les records de fréquentation avec quelques trois millions de spectateurs. D'autres cinéastes contribuent à cet élan populaire provoqué par le réveil du cinéma commercial d'un nouveau genre, mais ils tirent ce courant vers le bas, sous l'influence des modes cinématographiques dominants pour pulvériser les records de fréquentation. Certains qualifient ces produits de pure distraction, culturellement bâtards, « films Holly-turcs ». Parmi les réalisateurs qui alimentent ce courant, nous citerons Mustafa Altıoklar et Sinan çetin, ce dernier ayant été remarqué à l'étranger par la Propagande (Propaganda, 1998), une parabole satirique sur l'arbitraire et l'absurdité des pratiques administratives.
Parallèlement à ce renouveau du cinéma d'auteur et au réveil du cinéma populaire, les années 90 voient également l'émergence de jeunes cinéastes turcs qui vivent dans les pays européens. Pour la plupart issus de l'immigration, ils ont un regard culturellement riche et contrasté. Fatih Akın qui est né en Allemagne y réalise deux films remarquables : l'Engrenage (Kısa ve Acısız / Kurz und Schmerzlos, 1998), et En juillet (Temmuz'da / Im Juli, 2000). Yilmaz Arslan réalisateur remarqué de la Blessure (Yara, 1998), a tourné une grande partie de ce film en Turquie, bien qu'il habite l'Allemagne. Ferzan Özpetek* est également un cinéaste turc qui vit à l'étranger. Il s'est installé en Italie où il est venu faire ses études. Il retourne tourner en Turquie ses deux premiers films, Hammam (Hamam, 1996), et Harem soirée (Harem Suare, 1999), succès public et critique au niveau international.
La diversité des sensibilités, le dynamisme des coproductions, l'exigence d'une certaine qualité cinématographique, le courage, la persévérance et le professionnalisme des jeunes cinéastes, sont autant d'éléments d'un renouveau qui a pris corps année après année. Entre films d'auteur ambitieux et films de pur divertissement, le cinéma turc peut donc envisager son avenir avec un optimisme inégalé depuis longtemps. Cet avenir multiforme et multicolore sera certainement tourné vers l'Europe, tant sur le plan esthétique que celui des conditions de production.
TURTURRO (John)
acteur et cinéaste américain (Brooklyn, N. Y., 1957).
Visage presque anonyme, gueule de travers, John Turturro passe d'abord inaperçu. Il ne faut pas s'y tromper, car son visage ne s'oublie pas, et son talent remarquable à jouer les gens gauches et empruntés a frappé plus d'un grand cinéaste. Spike Lee l'emploie régulièrement, et Joel Coen lui a donné le meilleur de ses seconds rôles, le maître chanteur minable de Miller's Crossing (1990), et son premier grand rôle, le scénariste coincé de Barton Fink (1991), qui lui valut un prix d'interprétation à Cannes. L'année suivante, il obtenait la Caméra d'or au même festival avec sa première réalisation, Mac, film autobiographique sincère et sans concession qui raconte la vie d'ouvrier de son propre père. Depuis, c'est Robert Redford qui lui a donné un très grand rôle dans Quiz Show (1994), où, dans le monde truqué des jeux télévisés naissants, il incarne à merveille la mauvaise conscience du pays tout entier. Il interprète ensuite les Liens du souvenir (D. Keaton, 1995) ; Grace of my Heart (id., Allison Anders, 1997) ; la Trève (F. Rosi, id.) ; Box of Moonlight (id., Tom Di Cillo, id.). Il a signé en 1997 sa deuxième mise en scène, Illuminata.
TUSHINGHAM (Rita)
actrice britannique (Liverpool 1942).
Elle débute à l'écran à l'apogée du Free Cinema en incarnant Jo, l'adolescente au visage ingrat mais au charme prenant d'Un goût de miel (T. Richardson, 1961). Elle se spécialise alors dans les emplois d'actrice réaliste : The Leather Boys (S. Furie, 1963), la Fille aux yeux verts (D. Davis, 1964), le Docteur Jivago (D. Lean, 1965), le Gourou (J. Ivory, 1969). Richard Lester avait décelé ses dons comiques qu'il utilisera avec bonheur dans le Knack... et comment l'avoir (1965) et dans l'Ultime Garçonnière (1969), tandis que Desmond Davis en fera l'une des Deux Anglaises en délire (1967). Faute de rôles adéquats, elle ne retrouvera pas au cours des années 70 et 80 le succès de ses premiers films, malgré des interprétations remarquées dans A Judgement in Stone (Ousama Rawi, 1986), Resurrected (Paul Greengrass, 1989) et An Awfully Big Adventure (M. Newell, 1995).
TUTTLE (Frank)
cinéaste américain (New York, N. Y., 1892 - Los Angeles, Ca., 1963).
Rédacteur en chef adjoint de Vanity Fair puis scénariste, il devient réalisateur en 1922. Sa carrière s'est presque intégralement déroulée à la Paramount, où il dirigera notamment Bebe Daniels, Richard Dix, Clara Bow, Bing Crosby ou Stuart Erwin sans témoigner d'une réelle personnalité. Samuel Goldwyn lui confie en 1933 la réalisation de Roman Scandals (1933) avec Eddie Cantor. On lui doit deux adaptations intéressantes : la Clef de verre (The Glass Key, 1935, d'après Dashiell Hammett) et Tueur à gages (This Gun for Hire, 1942, d'après Graham Greene, avec Alan Ladd et Veronica Lake). À l'époque du maccarthysme, cité comme témoin devant la Commission des activités antiaméricaines, il doit reconnaître son ancienne appartenance au parti communiste et dénoncer certains de ses camarades. Sa carrière (jusque-là prolifique) connaît alors un temps d'arrêt. En 1956, il revient à l'écran et signe une solide adaptation de William P. McGivern, Colère noire (Hell on Frisco Bay), qui oppose Alan Ladd au gang d'Edward G. Robinson.
