Introducteur du *ballet d'action au Danemark, qui ne connaissait jusqu'alors que les *divertissements dansés, il remonte quelques ballets d'Angiolini et crée plus de cinquante œuvres, dont beaucoup durent une soirée entière. Il signe le premier ballet sur un sujet « nordique » (Lagertha, 1801, mus. C. *Schall) et est l'un des premiers à s'inspirer des pièces de W. *Shakespeare : Roméo et Juliette (1811, mus. Schall), Macbeth (1816, mus. Schall). Très apprécié pour son habileté à créer une harmonie entre les solistes et le corps de ballet, il recherche l'équilibre idéal entre danse et *pantomime. Le seul ballet qui subsiste de lui aujourd'hui est un petit divertissement, les *Caprices de Cupidon et le maître de ballet (1786).

Compositeur et imprésario autrichien.
Formé à Vienne auprès de Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, il publie des compositions dès le début du XIXe siècle. Nommé en 1809 directeur et compositeur de la musique des danses dans les théâtres royaux de Naples, il collabore en 1811 avec L. *Henry à l'élaboration d'un projet d'école de danse. De retour à Vienne en 1820, il est administrateur de saisons d'opéra puis imprésario du Kärtnertor Theater (1828-1830). En 1834, il compose à Paris Brézilia ou la Tribu des femmes (1835, Ph. *Taglioni) et finit sa carrière à Naples. La plupart des grands chorégraphes du XIXe siècle ont monté ses ballets : G. *Gioia (Hercole al Termodonte, 1807), Henry (Otello, 1808 ; Sansone, 1810 ; Ismaans Grab oder die bezauberten Instrumenten, 1823 ; La Caravana del Cairo, 1824), L. *Duport (La Virtù premiata, 1816), A. *Vestris (*Macbeth, 1818), S. *Taglioni (I Portoghesi nell'Indie, 1819 ; Furio Camillo, 1838), J.-P. *Aumer (Alfred der Große, 1820), S. *Viganò (Cimene, 1820) ou encore P. *Hus, F. *Clerico, A. *Albert, J. *Coralli. Bien que contestées, ses musiques rencontrent un réel succès dont témoignent l'importance de sa production et de ses collaborations ainsi que les nombreuses transpositions pour piano de ses œuvres publiées à Naples, Milan et Vienne.

Élève de J. G. *Noverre, il danse devant la cour de France en 1770, à l'*Académie royale de musique (ARM) à Paris (1782-1783) puis à Venise, Turin, Naples et Milan. De retour comme chorégraphe à l'ARM en 1791, il crée avec succès Bacchus et Ariane, ce qui lui vaut d'être nommé *maître de ballet adjoint de P. *Gardel. Il fait ensuite carrière à Bordeaux (entre 1796 et 1800), Londres (1797-1798 et 1803) puis Vienne (1803-1805). Noverre voit en lui un chorégraphe ingénieux. Il contribue à la propagation du *ballet pantomime même s'il ne réussit pas à s'affirmer pleinement, barré par le talent de J. *Dauberval et de P. Gardel.

Bianca GALLIZIA (née en 1902).
Danseuse, chorégraphe et pédagogue italienne.
Élève de N. *Guerra et R. *Grassi, elle est nommée prima ballerina au *Teatro San Carlo de Naples en 1923, puis entame une carrière d'artiste invitée à l'étranger et en Italie où elle est de toutes les créations de l'entre-deux-guerres dont Énée (1937, A von *Milloss), Rondò veneziano (1931, M. *Terpis), Vecchia Milano (1932, L. *Massine) et *Schéhérazade (1935, B. *Romanov). Elle s'affirme en particulier à la *Scala comme interprète des grands ballets du répertoire et comme chorégraphe spécialisée dans les divertissements d'opéra. Elle se retire de la scène en 1950 et prend la direction de l'École et du Ballet du Teatro San Carlo jusqu'en 1974, contribuant activement à la renaissance du ballet italien de l'après-guerre. Pour sa contribution éminente à la vie de la danse en Italie, elle a reçu les prix Positano et Porselli.

Louis GALLODIER (1733-1803).
Maître de ballet français.
Formé à l'École de l'Opéra de *Paris, il s'installe en Suède en 1758 à la suite d'une tournée avec une troupe française et devient un important collaborateur du roi Gustave III, qui projette alors de fonder un opéra. Dès l'inauguration du Théâtre royal de Stockholm, en 1773, il prend la direction du *Ballet royal suédois, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'en 1795. Il assure parallèlement la formation de danseurs suédois, qui se substituent progressivement à la trentaine de danseurs français constituant initialement la compagnie. Chorégraphe aux talents modestes, il règle surtout les parties dansées des opéras dès le tout premier donné sur la nouvelle scène en 1773 (Thétis et Pélée), qui sera suivi de nombreux autres, dont *Atys de J.-B. *Lully. Pour les ballets, il encourage plutôt la venue de chorégraphes étrangers, composant cependant lui-même quelques ballets de style prénoverrien comme Acis et Galatée, Neptune et Amphitrite. Son action, qui contribue à enraciner fermement le ballet suédois naissant dans l'école française, lui vaut une place à part dans l'histoire artistique suédoise.

Jean-Claude GALLOTTA (né en 1950).
Danseur et chorégraphe français.
Étudiant de l'École d'Art de Grenoble, à vingt ans il découvre la danse *classique et les *claquettes. De 1976 à 1978, il crée des spectacles pluridisciplinaires dans des lieux désaffectés. En 1979, au retour États-Unis, où il découvre la danse *post-moderne américaine, il fonde le Groupe Émile Dubois et se fait remarquer dès ses premières pièces dont *Ulysse et *Daphnis et Chloé. En 1980, la compagnie s'installe à la maison de la culture de Grenoble (il sera le premier chorégraphe à diriger un tel établissement de 1986 à 1990) et devient *CCN de Grenoble en 1984. Tournées nationales et internationales se succèdent ainsi que les invitations à chorégraphier pour d'autres compagnies comme le *Lyon Opéra Ballet (la Solitude du danseur, 1995) ou le Ballet de l'Opéra de *Paris (les Variations d'Ulysse, 1996). Depuis 1997, il travaille régulièrement au Japon où se mettent en place à Shizuoka, sous sa responsabilité, un département de danse et une compagnie. En parallèle à ses créations, il réalise seul ou en collaboration une dizaine de films dont Rei Dom ou la légende des Kreuls (1989) et l'Amour en deux (1991).
