Exceptionnel danseur de flamenco à la flamme sèche, il donne ses lettres de noblesse au martinete (à l'origine, chant de forgeron). Celui qu'il interprète sous le pont de Ronda, dans le film Misterio y Duende del Flamenco (1952, réal. Edgar Neville) est un sommet du genre.

Compositeur italien.
Appelé en Russie en 1786 (probablement par G. Astarita) pour entrer dans la compagnie de l'opera buffa, il y travaille aussi comme chef d'orchestre et maître de chapelle. Auteur d'oratorios et d'œuvres pour le théâtre, il collabore avec C. L. *Didelot à Saint-Pétersbourg, composant notamment Nicette et Lucas (1817), le Calife de Bagdad (1818), Cora et Alonso (1820), Alceste ou la Descente d'Hercule aux enfers (1821).

Danseur et chorégraphe français.
Ingénieur de formation, saxophoniste, il étudie la danse auprès d'O. *Duboc, dont il intègre la compagnie. Il danse ensuite pour S. *Aubin. En 1984, il crée la compagnie la Liseuse et se fait connaître en 1985 avec Antiquités (scén. S. *Goury). La langue écrite ou orale est, sous différents modes (voix, scansion, essai, récit, graphie), le moteur rythmique et musical de sa danse où se mêlent humour et poésie.

Adolphe APPIA (1862-1928).
Scénographe et théoricien suisse.
Après une solide formation musicale, il s'initie en 1888 à la mise en scène au Hofoper de *Vienne. Admirateur du théâtre grec et des oeuvres de R. *Wagner, il propose un changement radical de la scénographie de son temps, exposé dans ses ouvrages, la Mise en scène du drame wagnérien (1895) et la Musique et Art du théâtre (1899). En 1906, il fait la rencontre déterminante d' É. *Jaques -Dalcroze dont il devient l'ami et le conseiller. Convaincu par les théories dalcroziennes, qui recoupent ses propres recherches sur la rencontre entre la musique, le corps et l'espace, il dessine une série d'“ espaces rythmiques ” permettant la mise envaleur de laplastique du corps, qui serviront de base à l'aménagement de la salle de spectacle de *Hellerau, ce “ Bayreuth des jambes ”, selon Paul Claudel, qui y présentera son Annonce faite à Marie (1913). Il signe également la scénographie d'*Orphée et Eurydice donné à Hellerau (1912-1913) et d' Écho et Narcisse, *ballet pantomime présenté à l'Institut Jaques-Dalcroze de Genève (1919) ainsi que quelques mises en scènes d'opéras de Wagner.
Appia conçoit le lieu de spectacle comme un espace libre et transformable, ouvert sur la vie sociale. Écartant l'illusion de la toile peinte et du réalisme décoratif, il place la présence vivante de l'interprète au centre d'un dispositif scénique épuré qu'il déploie dans les trois dimensions de l'espace selon une rythmique des volumes et des lignes (plans inclinés ou surélevés, escaliers). Il assigne en outre à la lumière, véritable musique de l'espace, le rôle de souligner et d'éclairer les ressorts intimes de l'action, le secret même du drame. Ces conceptions, alors révolutionnaires, pour lesquelles il reconnaîra sa dette à Jaques-Dalcroze dans son dernier ouvrage, l'uvre d'art vivant (1921), lui valent la reconnaissance immédiate d'artistes tels que S. *Diaghilev, M. *Reinhardt et Bernard Shaw et une influence diffuse mais profonde sur toute la scénographie du XXe siècle.

Danseur et chorégraphe argentin.
Il reconnaît parmi ses maîtres D. *Hoyer, Elide Locardi, R. *Schottelius, M. *Ruanova et T. *Grigorieva. En 1959, il intègre le Ballet du Teatro Argentino de La Plata, ainsi que le Grupo de Camara de D. Hoyer, en tant qu'assistant et interprète. En 1962, il présente ses premières œuvres à Barcelone avec Beatriz Margenat puis signe, en 1964, El Unicornio, la Gorgona y la Mantícora pour l'*AADA au Teatro *San Martín de Buenos Aires. Sa production féconde se poursuit avec la présentation de Estancia (1966, mus. Ginastera) au *Teatro Colón et Crash (1967) au mythique *Instituto Torcuato Di Tella. En 1968, il fonde le Ballet del Teatro San Martín, ensemble pour lequel il compose tout d'abord Symphonia (1968) et qu'il dirige jusqu'en 1970, menant ensuite une carrière internationale. En 1979, il dirige le Ballet du Teatro Colón, où il chorégraphie le *Songe d'une nuit d'été, puis le Grand Théâtre de *Genève (1980-1990). De retour en Argentine, il est nommé à nouveau directeur du Ballet del Teatro San Martín (1990-1997) ; il y crée Numen (1991) et Noche de Rondas (1991), puis Bestiario (1992). En 1997, il crée Astor à l'Opéra de *Rome. Chorégraphe pour de nombreux films, opéras et mises en scènes théâtrales, il signe des œuvres pour l'Opéra de *Paris, celui de *Berlin, le *Ballet royal suédois, le Joffrey Ballet, le *Royal Winnipeg Ballet, le Ballet national de *Finlande notamment. Régulièrement primé en Argentine et à l'étranger, il est membre de l'Académie Argentine de Musique.

Loipa ARAUJO (née en 1943).
Danseuse cubaine.
Elle débute avec le Ballet national de *Cuba en 1959 et elle devient étoile en 1967. Médaille d'or au Concours de *Varna (1965) et d'argent à celui de Moscou (1969), elle est définie par le critique Arnold Haskell comme " une orchidée dans le jardin du ballet ". Effectuant une brillante carrière avec la troupe cubaine, elle s'expatrie à l'occasion et crée ainsi en 1976 les Intermittences du cœur et Casse-Noisette de R. *Petit. Ses interprétations dans *Notre-Dame de Paris (1973) et dans l'Arlésienne (1974) avec le Ballet national de Marseille font date.

Mia ARBATOVA (1910-1990).
Danseuse, pédagogue et chorégraphe israélienne d'origine russe.
Soliste au Ballet de l'Opéra de Riga, elle émigre en Palestine en 1924. Elle fonde la compagnie de théâtre satirique Il La Lo et ouvre, en 1943, la première école de danse classique du pays. En 1949, elle fonde The Folk Ballet avec Irene Gutry, Mia Pique et Elisheva Mona. Grâce à son enseignement très exigeant, certains de ses élèves rejoignent ensuite le *Ballet Rambert (Zohara Simkins), la compagnie R. *Petit (Moshe Lazara) ou le *Metropolitan Opera Ballet (Nira Pas). Le Concours Arbatova, qui a lieu annuellement, est dédié à sa mémoire.
