CALENDRIER RÉPUBLICAIN
The Republican calendar was first used in 1793. The year began on 22nd September and was divided into twelve months of thirty days each, the remaining days being given over to celebrations. The names of the months were inspired by the changing seasons, the weather and the harvest : vendémiaire, brumaire, frimaire, nivôse, pluviôse, ventôse, germinal, floréal, prairial, messidor, thermidor, fructidor. The calendar was officially replaced by the Gregorian calendar in 1806.
