| Captain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly convicted of passing military secrets to the Germans in 1894. His innocence was gradually established, notably by Zola's letter J'accuse published in l'Aurore. The affair, exacerbated by the fact that Dreyfus was Jewish, crystallized the opposition between left- and right-wing parties. The nation was divided between dreyfusards, calling for justice and favouring reformist and socialist trends, and the anti-Semitic anti-dreyfusards. |
