L'ÉDIT DE NANTES
Signed in 1598 by Henri IV, the Edict marked the end of the Wars of Religion and guaranteed a number of rights to the Protestant Huguenots, in particular freedom of conscience and the practice of their religion in certain prescribed areas. Its revocation in 1685 by Louis XIV resulted in a brutal repression which caused many Huguenots to emigrate to other European countries.
