• Le compteur à double ou triple cadran est un compteur équipé de plusieurs compte-tours pour pouvoir enregistrer la consommation d’énergie dans les différents postes horaires : heures de pointe, heures pleines ou heures creuses prévues par la tarification. Les différents compte-tours sont mis en service ou hors service par des électro-aimants commandés par une horloge à changement de tarif.
Principales caractéristiques
Les compteurs sont homologués dans l’une des quatre classes repérées par une des lettres A, B, C ou D définissant le facteur de charge. Ils doivent avoir une classe de précision, de l’ordre de ± 1,5 p. 100, qui varie avec la charge traversante : l’étalonnage est généralement fait pour trois valeurs, 1 et 1,5 ou 2 fois le courant nominal. Enfin, pour une charge très réduite, le compteur ne doit pas démarrer. Aucun compteur ne peut être utilisé sur un réseau de distribution s’il ne répond à des critères d’homologation à l’origine et de précision au moment de l’installation.
Compteurs pour courant continu
Ces compteurs sont beaucoup moins répandus que les appareils à courant alternatif. Depuis la disparition des distributions de courant continu, ils ne sont plus utilisés que pour des mesures spéciales, par exemple en traction, en électrolyse, pour le contrôle de la charge des batteries d’accumulateurs et pour la totalisation de certaines grandeurs telles que les débits. Très souvent, ils sont conçus comme des moteurs à courant continu, mais sans fer. Dans certains cas, ils peuvent n’être que des ampère-heuremètres, l’inducteur étant alors un simple aimant permanent.
Les disques métalliques des compteurs portent un repère, généralement un trait de peinture, permettant un étalonnage facile en comptant le temps t exprimé en secondes pour effectuer un nombre de tours n donné. L’énergie consommée exprimée en watts-heures est donnée par la formule dans laquelle c est la constante du compteur, inscrite sur celui-ci sous la forme de watts-heures par tour.

Appareil permettant le comptage d’impulsions, correspondant à des avalanches d’ions, produites par le passage d’une particule ionisante entre deux électrodes polarisées de signe contraire.
Principes
a) Lorsqu’une particule chargée traverse le compteur, elle libère des ions, qui sont attirés vers une électrode ; lorsqu’un ion se déplace vers l’anode, sa vitesse croît à cause du champ électrique, de plus en plus élevé quand l’ion se rapproche de l’anode ; aussi cet ion est-il capable d’ioniser les atomes de gaz, et les ions créés peuvent à leur tour donner naissance à d’autres ions (avalanche de Townsend).
L’apport de la charge sur l’électrode se traduit par une variation de la tension, variation à laquelle on donne le nom d’impulsion : ΔQ étant la charge recueillie, et C la capacité du dispositif.
b) L’amplitude de l’impulsion dépend, pour un rayonnement de nature et d’énergie données, de la tension appliquée aux électrodes ; les courbes ci-dessous indiquent comment varie, pour deux rayonnements de pouvoir ionisant différent (α et β), l’impulsion en fonction de la tension.
Cette courbe comprend plusieurs parties.
• Région I : fonctionnement en chambre d’ionisation. De A à B, tous les ions produits sont collectés, et l’impulsion résultante est constante. Deux points M et N de cette région ne diffèrent que par les temps de collection correspondants.
• Région II : régime proportionnel. Les ions libérés sont suffisamment accélérés pour provoquer une ionisation secondaire et par conséquent une augmentation de l’impulsion. Les impulsions produites dans cette région, par deux rayonnements distincts, α et β par exemple, ont des amplitudes qui dépendent du pouvoir ionisant de la particule, la quantité d’électricité recueillie étant proportionnelle à l’énergie abandonnée par la particule.
• Région III : régime semi-proportionnel. Les impulsions continuent de croître avec la tension appliquée, mais moins vite pour la particule ionisante (α) que pour l’autre. Les deux courbes se rapprochent pour se rejoindre au seuil de la région suivante.
• Région IV : régime Geiger-Müller. Les amplitudes des impulsions ne dépendent plus de la nature de la particule. Les rayons α, β et γ deviennent indiscernables ; mais l’impulsion est très supérieure à celle qui est produite dans les régions précédentes et plus facilement décelable.
Compteurs Geiger-Müller (GM) (région IV)
Ce sont des petites chambres dans lesquelles l’ionisation primaire a été amplifiée. Il en existe de nombreux modèles, composés d’une coque soit métallique, soit en verre rendu conducteur par un dépôt convenable (argent), de forme généralement cylindrique, et d’un fil qui collecte les ions libérés.
Le gaz de remplissage est de l’argon à basse pression (10 ou 20 cm), additionné d’une petite quantité de vapeur d’alcool ou d’halogène. L’argon augmente la mobilité des électrons, et la vapeur organique permet de couper la décharge en la limitant à une durée très brève (de l’ordre de la microseconde). La tension appliquée entre la coque et le fil dépend de la nature du gaz et des dimensions du compteur ; les tensions courantes s’échelonnent entre 300 et 1 600 V. Chaque impulsion est suivie d’un « temps mort » pendant lequel aucune particule ne peut être enregistrée et qui est de l’ordre de 300 μs, pour les compteurs usuels ; cela conduit à des « pertes » lorsque les taux de comptage sont élevés.
L’efficacité des compteurs GM pour les α et les β est proche de 100 p. 100. Pour les γ, elle est faible (~ 2 p. 100). Cela tient au fait que les γ sont peu ionisants et peuvent traverser un compteur sans avoir créé la paire d’ions nécessaire à son déclenchement. Les compteurs GM destinés aux γ possèdent des parois de numéro atomique élevé (bismuth par exemple), et ce sont les électrons Compton arrachés à cette paroi qui déclenchent le compteur. L’impulsion est délivrée ensuite à un système de numération : échelle qui permet le comptage individuel, ou intégrateur, qui donne le nombre moyen d’impulsions par seconde. Pour éviter les pertes, l’impulsion est délivrée à ces dispositifs par un « adapteur d’impédance » nommé préamplificateur.
Ces appareils sont d’un emploi très répandu. On réalise des systèmes de qualité médiocre mais robustes et peu coûteux ; on les emploie couramment pour la surveillance de routine et dans la prospection des minerais d’uranium.
