Golda Meir, juive ukrainienne élevée en Israël, militante sioniste de la première heure, fut Premier ministre travailliste de l'État d'Israël de 1969 à 1974. Peu avant sa mort (1978), elle fut associée au rapprochement entre l'Égypte et l'Israël, rapprochement initié par le président égyptien Sadate en 1977, alors que les conservateurs étaient au pouvoir en Israël. La visite de Sadate à Jérusalem fut suivie par les accords de Camp David et par un traité signé entre l'Israël et l'Égypte en mars 1979. C'étaient les premiers actes officiels passés entre Israël et l'un de ses voisins arabes.
