« Many years ago, I worked on the Goldwyn lot, and I was taking a little walk between the stagesand I heard my name and I turned around, and there was Sam Goldwyn, standing in the window. And he says ‘Wilder ! What’s the matter with you ? You look depressed.’ And I said ‘I am depressed, Mr Goldwyn, becasue my last picture, ssssrrrrrtt’ [makes whistling sound], down the tubes’. And he says ‘Wilder ! When are you going to learn ? In life you have to take the bitter with the sour !’ »

« Il y a quelques années, je travaillais pour la Goldwyn, et je faisais une petite promenade entre les scènes. J'entends mon nom, je me retourne et c'était Sam Goldwyn, debout à la fenêtre. Et il dit : « Wilder ! Qu'est-ce qui vous arrive ? Vous avez l'air déprimé. » Et je dis « Je suis déprimé, M. Goldwyn, parce que mon dernier film pfuiiit, en dessous de tout ». Et il dit : « Wilder ! quand allez-vous apprendre ? Dans la vie vous devez prendre l'amer avec l'acide ! »
