Linguiste américain (Woodstock, Connecticut, 1912).

Il a élaboré une théorie linguistique originale d'inspiration behavioriste, la tagmémique, qu'il expose dans Language in Relation to an Unified Theory of the Structure of the Human Behavior (1954-1960, 3 volumes). Il s'est également occupé de phonétique et de phonologie.
