LES HALLES

The central Paris food markets, dating from the Second Empire. Once a tourist attraction and also a source of traffic congestion, they were moved to the outskirts, mainly to Rungis, near Orly, in the 1960s. After much delay and controversy, the site was redeveloped in the late 1970s with a Metro station and a modernistic shopping centre, the Forum des Halles.
