LA GUERRE D'ALGÉRIE
The most bitter of France's post-colonial struggles, 1954-62. In a country dominated by a million white settlers, the pieds noirs, the government's failure to crush the revolt of the Front de libération nationale (FLN), despite massive military intervention, led settlers and army officers to attempt a takeover of the colony. The recall to power of General de Gaulle (1958), and the Accords d'Évian (1962), led to Algeria's independence and the resettlement of the pieds noirs in France.
